Rick Carlisle Resigns as Mavericks Head Coach
After 13 Seasons
Ending a Long Tenure
Rick Carlisle has resigned as head coach of the Dallas Mavericks, the team announced Thursday, ending his 13-year tenure. The move comes one day after the departure of longtime Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, who sold the team to a group led by former U.S. president Barack Obama.
Carlisle, 61, compiled a record of 555-478 in 13 seasons as the Mavericks coach from 2008-21. He led the Mavericks to an NBA title in 2011, defeating the Miami Heat in six games. Carlisle is the winningest coach in Mavericks history.
Carlisle's resignation comes as a surprise to many, as he had been under contract with the Mavericks through the 2022-23 season. However, it is believed that Carlisle was unhappy with the direction of the team under new ownership and decided to step down.
